GT LEADers in Action!
April 2016

Greetings, families!  I am thrilled to inform you that all testing is finally completed.  Over 100 students were assessed over the last few weeks, seeking entrance into the GT LEAD program and/or the Aspire Academy.  Due to the large volume of students across the district wanting to participate in the program, the notification dates were delayed.  If your child was a part of the testing, please know that all scores were submitted to the Advanced Academics department last Friday, and you should be hearing something over the next week or two.  (Aspire Academy notification can take longer, as it is a very complex task of finding the highest qualified students from all elementary campuses.)
Thank you so much for your patience.

SPEAKER, IAN BYRD, COMES TO GCISD
Please make plans to hear Ian Byrd on Friday, April 22 at 6:00 pm at the PDEC building (5800 Colleyville Blvd.) speak about preparing your gifted child socially and emotionally on their road to success.  The event is free to SAGE members and $15 at the door for non-members.
It will be a powerful and informative experience!

What's going on at Cannon in the LEAD classroom?

Kindergarten is analyzing multiple combinations of things.  We read the story A Three Hat Day, and now they are evaluating how many different ways they can wear six hats and in what order.  So far, the cowboy hat is the fav!

1st is learning about ocean creatures, and we turned a portion of our classroom into a giant oceanic aquarium.  Scholars have been swimming into LEAD, dodging crazy creatures that appear to be several species into one, such as clownawolopus and octopuffergolds.  Yikes, I see a jellyurtle headed our way!

2nd grade is completing final touches on their wolf trap designs.  Those poor little pigs need a big break from the hungry wolf, and second grade is here to help in a gentle, but effective, way.  There is no simple way that nasty wolf is getting out of these clever designs involving simple machines.

Our next study will involve understanding ambiguity, being able to see and relate to something in more than one way.  Students will create pictures using geometric shapes in a creative and original manner.

3rd grade has been deeply involved decoding and encoding secret messages to help solve a secret spy issue.  That's all I can tell you....dangerous secret spy stuff...you wouldn't understand....
Secret codes call for secret places.
Ah, the feeling of successfully breaking a code!
4th grade is completing their Rube Goldberg-ish marble runs before this week. Groups will earn points based on the length of time their run operates, the number of marbles used in the run, the different "tracks" created and innovative touches.  I can hardly wait to see what these gifted engineers come up with!

5th grade is making last minute touches on their SPARK Talk materials.  Students signed up for a date to present, so the long-awaited moment is coming soon.  It will be powerful and life-changing to see them shine on stage as they speak about their passions!
Amazing Emily wearing her new eSight glasses she received last week.  She is looking and "seeing" her teacher for the very first time!  WOW!

Practicing improv presentations as we prepare for our upcoming SPARK Talks.
